P4
Welcome to P4! Over the past few weeks, we have been having fun settling into life in P4 and learning our new routines!
We are starting exciting new themes this year as part of our new ‘thematic’ units. The first theme we are exploring is called ‘Them Bones, Them Bones’ where there are three separate areas of focus. The first section is all about our bones and the skeletal system. We discover how to keep our bones strong and healthy; we find out what jobs our bones have, we look at x-rays and we find out what happens when bones are broken! In the second section we look at animal bones and which animals are vertebrates or invertebrates. And finally, in the third section we become archaeologists as we explore the world of dinosaurs and their bones! We will learn all about these exciting creatures; what they ate, what time periods they lived in, we classify types of dinosaurs, we look at where remains of dinosaurs were found, we explore fossils, and we will even have the chance to dig a few up ourselves!
In Numeracy we are currently developing our number and mental maths skills to help solve number problems. We have loved playing interactive class games to help with our learning! We have also been using all types of data handling and learning all the ways to sort and classify information.
In Literacy we are enjoying the ‘Funnybones’ book series through shared reading sessions where we learn our grammar concepts. We will be reading lots of exciting ‘bone’ themed books and are very eager to begin the dinosaur series! This term we are working towards writing our own non-chronological reports on dinosaurs and will be doing lots of research on our Chromebooks to find out all the relevant information! We will also be writing some lovely acrostic poetry.
As part of getting to know each other and in preparation for independent writing about us, we have taken part in hot seating activities where we asked each other questions to find out more about our personalities and interests. This helped the children with their talking and listening skills.
In P4 we will also be taking part in weekly ABL (Activity Based Learning) sessions which is always a favourite in P4 where we get the chance to get creative and use our curiosity as we explore our theme further through different activity stations.
P4 have loved being part of the ‘big playground’ and we really enjoy our TOPS (Taking Outdoor Play Seriously) time!
